Sabachthani

Instrumentation: Brass (4.4.3.2) and Organ

Duration: c. 35mins

Completed: 2015

Notes:

My largest and most demanding brass work, Sabachthani was commissioned by Edward Liebrecht and OFO as the centre piece of their first brass Christmas concert (although the story is perhaps more appropriate for the Easter season). The work is programmatic, setting the well known hymn tune, ‘Old Hundredth’ to the story of the St. Matthew Passion – essentially telling Jesus’ life from a his birth to his crucifixion and eventual ascension. The title is taken from the Hebrew that Jesus said on the cross “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani”, roughly translated as “my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”. The work’s structure can be seen as a set of free variations on the tune, each corresponding to a part of the story.
