Duration: c. 14mins

Completed: 2016

Written for Tubist, Stuart Beard and the Oxfordshire Festival Orchestra.

The original concept behind this piece was to write a piece where the shape of the piece mirrored the different phases of a total solar eclipse where the orchestra would get covered by the solo tuba and then be revealed again just as the sun is covered by the moon during a solar eclipse. However, during composition the piece became less strictly structured than the concept and ended up with an introduction and several lulls in the overall ‘eclipse’ shape. The unusual scoring for Eclipse was down to the forces required for the other pieces in the concert the piece was written for, most notably Janacek’s Sinfonietta – we still had 5 trumpeters spare!
