Instrumentation: Solo Piano
Duration: c. 30mins
A set of 10 preludes and fugues, each pair roughly lasting 3 minutes. They were composed entirely in the month of June in 2020 during the first COVID-19 lockdown. The challenge was to write a prelude or a fugue per day (with a day’s rest after each pair). Piano music was the only music I could play for myself at home during those lockdowns which gave me the opportunity to explore a large amount of repertoire. The influence of which is quite clear on these pieces – Nielsen’s Chaconne had a particularly strong impact. The works are of varying difficulty and character and attempt to explore different things. The fugues in particular can be seen to develop organically through the set as my interpretation of the form developed. The pdf also comes with substantial notes on each piece at the end.
